Anyhow, the fan was failing. It's a proprietary design. I got a replacement on the interwebs but it's wrong- and it's the only hope I had for a direct replacement. So I hatched a Plan. Remove the fan from the motherboard, cut a hole through the case, install a standard-size fan pushing air into the case.
In the end it required some soldering and extra connectors from my computer junk bin. But it works!
